Notes from the Music Director
--by Barbara McOwen

Only two tunes this month, as most of us have our hands full learning the Gala
concert tunes. We will not have a regular gathering in November; as usual it is
pre-empted by the Gala concert.

The two tunes are both jigs in A minor and make great jam session tunes, and
can also be included in dance sets. I don't have a lot of information about
these tunes and would love to know more! I used Drummond Castle inone of my
very first dance arrangements, waaay back in 1971! The opening features a
soaring octave leap, and therefore reminds a lot of people of Tha Mi Sgith. Mr
Charles Graham's Welcome Home is by William Gow, Niel Gow's oldest
son. Although it follows a very simple and common Am-to-G chord pattern, the
melody frames these chords in a very attractive way. Also, it can be easily
arranged for pipes. Both tunes are not difficult, yet have a lot of drive and I
hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

IMPORTANT PARKING
NOTICE
--From Sylvia Miskoe, edited by Gail Birch

Hi Everyone - When I picked up the key for the theater today they handed out a
day-glo pink notice that said: "WARNING If anyone associated with a group using
the Annicchiarico Theater parks in the resident parking lot, that group will be
banned from using the theater. Concord Housing Authority" This is a serious
offense, so please take note and DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT NEXT TO THE THEATER!
We may park in the staff lot across from the theater door or on the street.

PEOPLE NEWS

Original Tunes Wanted
--by Sylvia Miskoe

Calling all composers: Come out of Your Closets!! The April session will be
our third Original Composer session. Each person, please send only one
submission. If you send me more than one, I will choose the first one out of
the envelope. The deadline is February 1. Your tune can be a melody, a melody
with chords, or a melody with harmonies and chords, but, please, don't send an
orchestration for 60 pieces. I can help you if you can play the tune but are
not sure how to put it down on paper. Send your tunes to me, Sylvia Miskoe,
102 Little Pond Road, Concord, NH 03301.

Childsplay Concert
--by Margaret Lepley

On Dec 10-12 more than thirty musicians, collectively known as "Childsplay",
will come together in concert to perform jazz and classical music and
traditional fiddle music of the US, Ireland, Canada, and Scandinavia, on
instruments made by violinmaker Bob Childs. There are so many members in the
group that it's not possible to list them all. However, here's mention of a few
that might be of interest to SRS members. Four long distance travellers are
coming from Sweden, including Lars Moberg and Lars Hoekpers. From a bit closer
to home are many talented musicians from contradancing and other musical venues
(Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, Kerry Elkin, Steve Hickman, Matt Glaser, Ruthie
Dornfeld). Though it doesn't happen often, they all love to get together,
share music with each other, and give that sharing to the world at large. This
is a vibrant and powerful experience that surrounds the listener with sound -
playful, innovative and driving. They'd love to see you there. For details on
concert times and places see the calendar section and grab a flyer at the SRSNH
meeting. And if you get a chance, check out www.childsplay.org. P.S. I play
with Childsplay. But I'm going to be half-way round the world that particular
weekend. (Major bummer) Maybe if I hear all about the concerts from everyone
it'll make up for my not being there personally.

Fiddling at the 1999 NH
Highland Games
--by Livia Kohn

Both the regional and national Scottish fiddle competitions were held at the
Highland Games this September, with many SRS members playing and helping. The
Regionals began Friday night and were judged by Jan Tappan from Los Angeles and
Charles Gore from Scotland. Our own Deidre and Chris Rees served as MC and
steward, and Sabrina Matteson helped with the registration. We had 6 novices,
10 juniors, and 4 open participants. Winners include Bria Sanford (junior
novice) Hannah M. Bailey (senior novice), Alanna Tryder (junior/ best
selection), and Thaddaeus Sze (open/ best selection). Second place was won by
Eden Forman (junior novice), Cecile Morrison (senior novice), Brandan Carey
Block (junior/best strathspey), and Carley Williams (open/best strathspey).
The Nationals were held on Saturday afternoon with 23 fiddlers
participating. Judges included Jan Tappan, Charles Gore, and John Turner from
Virginia. Our own Elly and Isobel Abelson served as MC and steward, with Deb
Humiston and her parents at registration. Some excellent fiddling could be
heard. Winners include Jeremy Kittel (junior/best MSR set) and Brandon Vance
(open/best strathspey/best MSR set). The second place went to Julia Tryder
(junior/ best march) and Andrew Dodds (open). Third were Alanna Tryder
(junior/best slow tune) and Lissa Schneckenburger (open). In addition, on
Sunday morning a competition was held for All Instruments, judged by Maggie
Carchrie of Boston. Ten contestants participated, among them one guitar player
who had never played before an audience before. SRS flutist Jeff Baker won the
open, Beatrix Whitehall (voice) took second place, and Peter Gilmore on
mandolin took third. Among juniors, the winner was Myles Matteson on small
pipes, second was Tyler Matteson on cittern, and third was Triona Kittel on
cello. Gayla Dawn Matos on guitar won novice competition. Overall, the events
went off fine, and both participants and judges were happy, the latter also
because they had received lodging right on the mountain, lessening the need to
commute and find parking spaces.

Paul Milde Has Stroke
--from Laura Stern

I think a lot or most of you know Paul. You may not know that he had a stroke
on Friday, the 5th. Here is the latest news from a member of Roaring Jelly:
... He is doing well and in very positive spirits. Paul said that, consistent
with his name, the stroke was mild. It left him with little movement of his
left leg and some possible effects in his right shoulder. He feels driving a
car will be difficult in the short term, but believes he will be able to play
the fiddle soon. He looks forward to the near-term relatively immobile
period as an opportunity to learn some new tunes he has been collecting. He
also looks forward to playing with the Jellies at venues where the distance
from home or steps are not an issue. Overall, Paul was humorous and thankful,
that with rehabilitation and change in diet to control his high blood pressure,
he will be able to pursue many of his interests.
